Canadian surfing carries with it a style and beauty completely unique unto itself. It takes a certain kind of person to deal with the frigid temperatures, thick neoprene and wildlife (think Killer Whales) which characterize the sport. But what some surfers may consider deterrents seem to be embraced by the Canadian surfing community. The serene landscape combined with empty lineups serve to create a certain mystic beauty in those Northern waters.
On Quadra Island, just northeast of Vancouver, a community of kayakers have taken to the Okisollo Rapids and proven that surfing in Canada, whether on board or boat, is alive and well. The rapids are accessible through pre-arranged boat transportation or, if you are particularly broke/determined, you can paddle there on a sea-kayak, all the while towing your white-water boat behind you. The rapids are contingent upon the tides and work best from April-September.
Perhaps it is all the hard work it takes to get there, or maybe just the raw beauty of the glassy water and untamed landscape, but there is no denying that this is some of the most peaceful surfing you will see today.
