It’s like an outdoor invasion. And every type of sport is coming. The Mothership announced its annual list of ESPY nominations this week, and since we’re coming off an Olympic winter, it’s heavy with winter sports stars.
Dominant halfpipe skier David Wise, Swedish slopestyle and big-air skier Henrik Harlaut, the incredibly-athletic snowboarder Marcus Kleveland (who could probably compete in skiing, too), and Brazillian skateboarder Kelvin Hoefler round out the men’s noms for Action Sports Athlete of the year.
Big Air gold medalist Jamie Anderson, halfpipe superstar Chloe Kim, 13-year-old phenom skater Brighton Zeuner, and stylish regular-footer Stephanie Gilmore round out the female side. Gilmore is the only surfer up for an ESPY this year.
While no male action sports athletes made the cut for the overall athlete award, Kim and alpine ski racing icon-in-the-making Mikaela Shiffrin are both up for Best Female Athlete. Shaun White was nominated for Best Olympic moment as well as best Olympian, along with Wise and Red Gerard. Shiffrin, Kim, and Anderson received nods in that category on the women’s side. Snowboarders Brenna Huckaby and Mike Schultz were both nominated in the Best Disabled Athlete category.
Hard to say what winning the separate action athlete categories could do for one’s career but if either Shiffrin or Kim won the overall athlete titles they’d be lifted to instant super-stardom.
