The Inertia

It’s a common old-time skier or snowboarder’s lament. Board a chair any day of the week with a crusty local that re-located to their dear mountain town in its halcyon days and you’re bound to get an ear full about the astronomical price of equipment and lift tickets. Crusty local guy isn’t wrong. The price of a lift ticket at the counter has become an increasingly difficult pill to swallow. But for those in the Tahoe area this June, Squaw Valley has a bit of a reprieve: a Friday lift ticket all month will cost you no more than a fiver. The only caveat being that you must purchase your ticket at least 48 hours in advance. Better still, all proceeds will benefit the Tahoe Fund, a local non-profit that supports environmental improvement projects.

According to a Tuesday press release, the goal of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows’ “Five Dollar Fridays” initiative is to support the Tahoe Fund’s goal to raise $35,000 to help the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition build low or no-cost bike racks near local Tahoe businesses. The ultimate goal is to encourage residents and visitors to ride their bikes around town instead of drive.

Squaw has pledged to match proceeds from advanced online lift ticket sales with a donation of up to $10,000.

“Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows has been a long-time supporter of the Tahoe Fund through our ‘Green Bucks’ fundraising program,” said Amy Berry, CEO of the Tahoe Fund, in a statement. “Because of their support, we’ve been able to build new hiking and biking trails in the Tahoe Basin, and support initiatives that help get people out of their cars. We are thrilled that with the resort’s help, not only can people ski for only $5 on Fridays in June, but we’ll be able to install more bike racks at locations around the lake.”

Again, in order to purchase a five-dollar ticket, customers must buy lift tickets online or through the Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows app more than 48 hours in advance. Otherwise, tickets cost $39 and will not include the donation.

Squaw Valley will remain open until July 7.
