The Inertia

For Darcy Sharpe, “Don’t Be Lazy,” has become a mantra for his life: work your ass off. Be ready for your opportunities. And Darcy is as talented as they come in the snowboarding world. Unfortunately, he’s had to battle through ankle injuries over the last year or two. But just after Christmas, when every skier and snowboarder in the competitive world migrates to Aspen for the X Games, Darcy pounced, winning his first medal in Slopestyle (silver).

I met Darcy a fall or two ago in Jindabyne, Australia while he was training at Perisher. We sat down near Lake Jindabyne and he basically told me how grateful he was to be in his position. He was 20, cool as hell with a laid-back attitude that reflected his love for being in the mountains of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

It’s been a big month in the Sharpe household. After Darcy took X Games silver, his sister Cassie captured Olympic gold in halfpipe in South Korea. It’s easy to see why they’re both successful. Being lazy just isn’t their thing.
