The Inertia

Just yesterday, we shared an update in the high-stakes world of shot-ski world records. The news: Maine’s Sunday River plans to set a new world record next Monday, which would place them in the middle of a years-long back and forth between Breckenridge, Colorado, and Park City, Utah.

I say high stakes ironically because, well, the record for the world’s longest shot-ski isn’t an official world record at all. On December 13, 2024, Breckenridge took the title with 1,401 participants throwing back whiskey and vodka shots from 503 skis, but Guinness doesn’t keep a record for this because of the alcohol-related nature of the claim. That Wild West nature of laying claim to the accomplishment means anybody and everybody can take their shot, and given today’s EDM-fueled après culture, you could probably coordinate a day of slopeside binge drinking with ease.

As it turns out, Canada’s Mont-Orford was already busy stealing the title this season. The resort posted a video on social media Tuesday claiming 1,406 people had joined them to set the new mark with 506 skis linked together.

“Saturday, March 29th, will be etched in history,” they wrote on Facebook, adding “506 skis, 1460 people – a new world record broken together!  The party extended with the aprè ski 1976, the biggest après ski of the season. You looked good in your ’70s retro costumes!”

This evolving shot-ski world record is becoming one of skiing’s most fun stories. Just this winter we saw the record passed between Park City and Breckenridge — the original rivals — now onto Canadian soil, and this weekend, potentially back into the United States with a small town whose population is fewer than 500 people, last I checked.

In Breckenridge, the world record attempt is an annual tradition at Ullr Fest. So regardless of this weekend’s outcome or any last minute parties elsewhere this season, Breck locals will take their shot December 11-13, 2025.
