The longest of the three episodes so far, Episode 3 delivers more of what we’ve seen with Seeking Nirvana. Leigh Powis’ editing somehow makes it easy to watch long stretches of big mountain skiing without wanting to open another tab on your Safari browser. If these episodes were released as consecutive segments in a feature length film, the lack of variety in song and style would be an issue. Released separately, however, Seeking Nirvana becomes a trusty web-series that combines top-shelf editing with black label skiing.
Song choice in ski edits is obviously crucial. The songs used in Seeking Nirvana don’t have you scrambling to open Shazam on your phone, but they fit so perfectly with the visuals and overall vibe that a sort of harmony is achieved.
This episode incorporates a theme of “finding treasure,” a notion very much in line with the goal of seeking nirvana. While Nirvana is the feeling achieved by stomping a line, its the treasure of good snow and challenging mountain faces that lead riders to that sought after state of being. It seems that this crew found such treasure, but using it to their advantage does not come without adversity. A crash reel is included for the first time in the web series to show the difficulty behind the search for internal bliss.
With one more episode to go, we’ll get to see if this crew looks back on this season as one in which they successfully achieved that Buddhist state of mind.
