Earlier this summer, climber Sasha DiGiulian packed her car and drove 20 hours from Boulder, Colorado to Banff, Alberta. She was setting out to make history by being the first woman to ascend the Canadian Trilogy: Castle Mountain, Mount Louis, and Mount Yamnuska.
DiGiulian had spent the spring logging 30 to 40 weeks training for the task and then in June, a last-minute decision almost threw the entire thing out the window. “My original climbing partner and I were having personal disagreements,” she told Outside magazine. “Days before we were supposed to go to Canada, we decided not to do the project together. I questioned whether the project was going to happen. Could I do it alone? I wanted to try.”
When she arrived in Banff, DiGiulian got acquainted with the local climbing scene and committed to finding a new climbing partner that would help her make history. “Finding a climbing partner takes some planning, especially when you’re asking someone to come out to attempt a big wall that might take 18-plus hours,” she says. “But I found plenty of people willing to support me.”
