This is actually pretty funny. Exactly three years ago, The Inertia’s most esteemed investigative reporter, Johnny Utah, wrote a story about the ongoing battle resorts wage to be first. It was about a resort in the Sierras that fired up its chairlifts for an early October opening day months before snow would even fall. But anxious Southern Californians showed up more than happy to make their first runs of the season on dry grass anyway.
That was satire. This story is not. And that probably makes it even funnier.
A man by the name of Ron Konowitz is apparently very ready for the new season to get started. And it’s a safe bet to say he could hold the title for “first turns” on the entire Eastern Seaboard, logging a handful of free-heel runs on…an icy and otherwise sketchy access road in Lake Placid, New York.
“Day 1. October 8, 2022,” he posted on Facebook. “Powder To The People!”
Just going to grab the low-hanging fruit here and point out that three-quarters of an inch of ice laid on a concrete mountain road isn’t far off from a full-fledged powder day on the East Coast, so maybe Ron’s onto something. Toll road fees, lift passes, it’s all the same. Nonetheless, I really love Konowitz’s enthusiasm for the upcoming season.
