Ski resorts love to be the first to fire up lifts and welcome guests for a new season. Several resorts across the country have kicked off their 2024-2025 winter season thus far, including a handful in Colorado that just celebrated opening day this past weekend. Out West, Mt. Rose announced it’ll be the first Tahoe-area resort open when it welcomes skiers and riders this Friday, November 8.
“We’re thrilled to kick off our 60th season with another early November opening, and to welcome our guests back with 1,000 vertical feet of skiing and riding from day one,” they wrote in a statement Monday afternoon. “Ahead of the season, we reinvested more than $2.2 million in the resort experience, including snowmaking system enhancements, trail improvements, and a new snowcat to support our ability to offer a high-quality snow surface all season long.”
The resort’s crediting that investment in snow-making upgrades and the area’s high base elevation at 8,260 feet for winning this year’s race to open up first. Of course, there are a limited number of lifts and runs that will be accessible this early in the season but Mt. Rose says on average there’s about 14 to 18 inches on most runs. Images and videos shared by the resort on Monday show a clear difference from its mostly bare runs seen just a week ago, so the Mt. Rose crew clearly accomplished a lot once they saw a window to fire up the snow-making machines.
