The backcountry is not a safe place at the moment thanks to recent heavy snows. Yesterday, a father, who had taken his four-year-old son out-of-bounds at Blackcomb Resort in British Columbia to an area known as Corona Bowl, was caught in a slide that was apparently triggered from above by other skiers using the area.
Fortunately, the pair were able to self-rescue. “They were caught in the debris that was sliding down the hill,” Whistler Blackcomb safety manager Kira Cailes said. “Our search teams were triggered to respond if there needed to be a more detailed search but fortunately we did not have to continue any further.”
Cailes said the father and son were lucky because the slide was relatively small. This incident comes after a man was killed in the nearby Callaghan Valley earlier in March.
