Dubai is a surreal place. The stark contrast of overwhelming luxury smack dab in the middle of an arid desert has certainly sparked curiosity from the rest of the world. And the city has done some pretty remarkable things thus far — from the Palm Islands to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s highest tower, I’m certainly always waiting for what’s next.
According to The Guardian, their newest addition is a 1,200-meter ski slope to stretch from the Meyden racetrack to Burj Khalifa. Dubai’s current indoor resort, Ski Dubai, is 400 meters long, so the newest project will be three times larger than the already massive ski sanctuary. It’s also estimated to cost roughly $6.8 billion and house up to 78,000 people once it’s fully completed within the next five years.
What does this mean for the future of skiing? First off, skiing in the desert has just become that much better — especially given the presence of industry manufacturers in the area. It also opens up doors to ski events in the near future, not to mention the revenue from tourism. In 2014, approximately 13.2 million people visited Dubai and they aim to hit 20 million by 2020.
All in all, this is a pretty awesome addition to the “city, which never stops innovating.” Once this project is completed, I’m really hoping to see a Wadi Adventure 2.0.
