In a crazy halfpipe final Maddie Mastro threw down a double crippler, a first in women’s halfpipe history and beat the sport’s best, Chloe Kim–another first that hadn’t happened since January 13, 2018. But unfortunately, Kim lost a lot more than just a final: it looks as if she’ll lose the rest of her season after breaking her ankle when she came up gingerly after her first run.
She took the news of the injury gracefully, though, announcing on Twitter it would require surgery:
Today was insane!!! Love watching women’s snowboarding progress! Unfortunately found out that I broke my ankle today so I will need to get surgery to get it fixed. So bummed I won’t be able to compete in Mammoth but I will be there to support!! 😍

Kim’s streak of eight consecutive contest wins was impressive, to say the least. The last time she lost was at a Grand Prix event. She’d won X Games and Olympic gold since. And it took a bum ankle and new trick in women’s snowboarding to beat her as she finished each of her three runs in the final despite the injury. Kim will apparently enroll at Princeton this fall and didn’t offer much of a timetable for her return or any other details.
