The Inertia

Drones are fairly heavy, take skills to operate, often need to be licensed and, not to mention, aren’t cheap.

This idea might suffice. Or just be a way to change up your selfie game. Levin Pablo Trautwein, Nick Schjivens and Mark de Boer are Netherlands-based students and cinematographers. Last year, they were working on a film project but didn’t have the money to pay for a drone. They rigged a flying football out of cardboard and saw the potential for aerial photographs with this hand-held gadget.

Now they’re trying to mass-produce the AER, which allows you to pop a GoPro in the headmount. Working through Kickstarter they’re trying to raise $78,500 by November 3. The footage, as you can see, is different than a drone as it captures more of an arc shot and is only good for moments of footage, not long-lasting shots. And one can’t imagine this would be easy to use over water. But still a novel idea.
