The Inertia

Kelly Murphy released this crazy video of herself backcountry snowboarding in Japan. She’s wearing headphones, singing to herself (Rihana, bad choice BTW), when a bear appears to chase her in the background. “OMG! I was going through my snowboarding videos and I found a bear chasing me!!! I nearly got eaten!!! This was at Hakuba 47 in Japan, filmed yesterday! Be careful people!!!”

Yeah.

Now, we’ve seen videos where people are begging for attention and web hits. But this one looks pretty real, even though we have our doubts. Google the story and news organizations have already begun to spread cynicism on the video before it goes viral. There are actually Asiatic black bears in that part of world so it is possible to see bears as they come out of hibernation during spring skiing. But that thing looks like a gigantic Kodiak.

Reporters have flooded Murphy’s social media site with inquiries. Regardless, the video looks real enough to send chills down the spines of snow riders everywhere, especially as spring backcountry riding is in its prime in North America.
