The Inertia

Last Thursday, a helicopter crash in the La Sal Mountains east of Moab, Utah stranded three Division of Natural Resources workers that were tracking mountain goats. The helicopter was miraculously wedged on a steep precipice, but with little room for the three crew members to move.

“They were very fortunate that the helicopter kind of stayed where it was,” said Luke Bowman, chief pilot at Utah’s Department of Public Safety Aero-Bureau. “They could have slid a lot longer or tumbled a lot farther. Like I said, it was very steep, and they could have continued to roll down the hill.”

All three were lifted off the face of the mountain by the helicopter, which you can see in the footage above, and were said to be prepared for wintry weather. Incredibly, all escaped with only minor bumps and bruises. Snowy weather has impacted all areas of the West this week as winter has set in, full force.
