Some winters, your favorite resort just gets in the right storm track and things go to plan. Or better than to plan. They go off. Well, Steamboat Springs, one of Colorado’s favorite resorts, is going off. And it often happens in this little mountain town on the edge of the western Colorado plains. Storms hit the resort unabated after traveling across high mountain desert, collecting moisture – then, boom, Champagne Powder (yeah, the resort actually trademarked the term).

“Santa made it to town with another 15.5” last night for a storm total of 26.5,” wrote the resort yesterday. And as you can see, that’s nearly 30 inches of light, dry powder. The stuff we all live for.

Of course it’s been an abnormally slow start for a good portion of the Western U.S.Β  Many resorts in the Pacific Northwest are still a bit snow starved. Colorado, however has had a decent early season. Vail, south of Steamboat, received 11 inches this week, and has gotten more than 100 inches thus far. Crested Butte has also gotten nearly 100 inches of snowfall. The storm track is trending south as Taos, New Mexico received 13 inches over Christmas as well (although Utah is trending well, too, as Snowbird has received 145 inches).

Powderchasers is calling for things to turn around in the Sierra over the next few days so stay tuned.
