The Inertia

“You have to bring yourself to this state of relaxation and calmness that is so serene. When you take that drop you really are in a peaceful daze.”

Kimi Werner dives with sharks. She’s a spearfishing champion and an accomplished freediver. She’s incredibly connected with the ocean. However, the most inspiring thing about her isn’t what she does; rather, it’s how she does it. Werner has the skill to catch nearly any fish in her path, but she chooses not to. Her father taught her from a young age that it’s important to “only take what you need.” She doesn’t see the number of fish she catches as an indicator of her skill and performance; instead, she focuses on her state of mind and her personal restraint.

Werner exhibits an attitude that would benefit us all in almost any walk of life. Whether it be the number of fish we catch, the amount of food we eat, or the materials we use each day, we need to use restraint. We need to take and use only what we need. She reminds us that treading lightly can be the most rewarding way to live.
