Why does the ocean reflect our most powerful anguish, our darkest fear and our deepest dread? What is it about the deep, impenetrable waters of the sea? In order to reach some kind of peace with this torment, to explore its play on my mind, I am drawn back to the sea for more.
“The Ocean inside” is a short documentary film and art project exploring the deeper side of the ocean that’s found in all of us. It’s a meditative adventure series of film, art, creative nonfiction stories, sculpture, photography and spoken word performance; and we need your help on Kickstarter to make this happen.
This summer I am paddling 20+ miles along the wilderness coastline of northern California, seeking creative inspiration and meaning through an ocean-induced state of exhausted bliss. With a crack team of ocean-loving professionals, including journalist Sachi Cunningham, Chilean filmmaker Angel Marin and printmaker artist Mike Houston, we will create a short documentary film, an art magazine, a sculpture and photography exhibit, and nonfiction adventure stories about the journey.
My goal on this epic coastal journey is to explore the challenges, emotions and inspirations that the ocean gives me – seeking out a state of exhausted yet energizing creative bliss out on the wild open ocean – far removed from the distractions of society and civilization.
I grew up surfing, swimming, fishing and diving these same cold waters and I’ve been training for this adventure all year. This is a pilgrimage of sorts, returning back to my rural coastal roots to explore the outer reaches of what’s possible. This will be a difficult, exhausting and inspiring adventure. Due to the remote nature of the journey it involves a lot of training, planning and unexpected possibility.
But we need your help to crowdfund this project via Kickstarter. We chose to avoid corporate sponsorship of The Ocean Inside, aiming to evade any associated baggage and special interests. Hence, if “The Ocean Inside” project is not fully funded on Kickstarter, we don’t do it.
