The Inertia

It’s no secret that core strength is essential for surfing. The core muscles in your abs and back help support the spine and stabilize the upper body, allowing for both powerful and balanced movement. Without a strong core, balance and coordination on the board are much more difficult, and it’s more challenging to execute the twisting and turning movements of the upper body with sufficient stability.

This is why, no matter your level of surfing, it’s well worth your time to build and maintain core strength. You don’t need to spend hours on hours in the gym, but you should be incorporating some kind of core training into your weekly routine. This 20-minute ab workout is pretty challenging, so for beginners, you might want to ease into it. That being said, it’s a great workout for building core strength, and your abs will be on fire by the end.

Give it a try, and please listen to your body. If it’s too hard, or something doesn’t feel right, pause, catch your breath, and reevaluate. Preventing injury is key.
