The Inertia

We all know that functional sunglasses protect our eyes on the water and at the beach. But why does Dragon Eyewear stand apart? The short answer is style and materials.

You can scroll down to see the sunglass styles, but you might not notice the sustainable materials available in several Dragon sunglass frames. There are different approaches, some made from plant-based resin and others upcycled from plastic bottles. We even contacted Dragon athletes to hear which sunglasses are their favorite.

The Box 2

The Box 2 sunglasses are an update — or evolution — of the brand’s uber-popular The Box design. The sustainable Box 2 offers a more universal fit in the bridge while keeping the slim and edgy wraparound shape. Wraparounds aren’t for everyone, but they definitely offer maximum coverage

H2O Floating Styles

Seth Moniz is a fan of the H2O frames. “What’s not to love about sunglasses that float?” he asked. “They keep my eyes protected, and whether I’m paddling or swimming around or fishing off the boat, I never have to worry about losing them.”

Momentum H20 Polarized

This floating take on the Momentum keeps the wide, single-lens construction but uses Dragon’s H2O Floatable technology to make them easier find if they’re sent overboard. The Momentum H2O Polarized has a four-base shield nylon lens, an integrated cam hinge, and hydrophobic and oleophobic lens coatings.

Dune H2O

Based on its original Dune sunglasses, Dragon makes the Dune H2O from a TPX material with H2O Floatable technology. The six-base nylon lenses provide UV protection and are performance-polarized with hydrophobic and oleophobic lens coatings. Like other Dragon sunglasses, these provide Lumalens Color Optimization for bright colors and contrasts in natural environments. The frames have an integrated cam hinge and rubber temple tips for a snug, secure fit in the wild.

Plant-Based Resin

Dragon’s plant-based resin sunglasses are sourced from castor bean oil, a highly resilient and renewable alternative material with a smaller carbon footprint and environmental impact. Castor bean is a drought-resistant plant and requires little irrigation or fertilization so it can grow in arid regions where it doesn’t compete with other crops.

“As a mother and surfer, anyway that we can reduce the impact we have on our environment is important to me,” said Tia Blanco. “Dragon’s sustainable initiatives and product helps promote a healthier future for generations to come.”

Thorn

These new everyday sunglasses use a more sustainable plant-based resin to deliver the same UV protection and optics you’d expect. The four-base polycarbonate Lumalens tech provides clarity and contrast. You’ll find that several Dragon athletes chose to put their signature spin on the Thorn frame as part of the Signature Series sunglasses, which means they are available in several colors.

As mentioned above, the Signature Series lets athletes and ambassadors personalize Dragon sunglasses to match their style and preferences. Rob Machado has several styles but leans into those using more sustainable materials like plant-based resin.

“My collection with Dragon blends my passion for surfboard design with innovative eyewear. Seeing the resin designs come to life on the frames highlights our shared commitment to creativity, surfing, and great craftsmanship,” Machado said.

Dune

These eco-friendly Dune sunglasses flash a bit more flare thanks to the signature input from Rob Machado, a surfer who appreciates the forward-thinking design with some tiger-striped flare down the arms. While they began as castor beans, the Dune sunglasses perform from the dunes to the shoreline, with a snug fit from the frames and rubber temple tips, and the four-base lens protection.
