The Inertia

With its seven miles of majestic curving coastline, La Jolla is world famous for its 300-foot sea cliffs, rocky reefs, coves, and active sea life. For the first time in the quaint seaside village, a local photographer has opened a gallery dedicated to the “Crown Jewel.”

The Aaron Goulding Photography Gallery, located at 1273 Prospect Street, La Jolla, celebrated its grand opening on May 21st with a ribbon cutting ceremony in conjunction with the La Jolla Merchants Association.

“This town needs a gallery where people can find local imagery,” said Goulding, who specializes in surf, landscape, seascape, sea life, portrait, and underwater portrait photography. “There are a lot of people who really love La Jolla, and they love every little corner of it, and I’m one of those people. I want to show the world what I have seen for the past 25 years in and around the ocean—all the beautiful sunsets and sunrises by the sea, waves, and sea life, all from the water, land and air.”

While the new gallery will mainly focus on scenery and landmarks in La Jolla, Goulding will also feature and sell work from his many travels to destinations, such as Indonesia, Hawaii, and Mexico, as well as throughout California, including Yosemite, San Francisco, and Napa Valley. Goulding, who travels the world in search of big swells to photograph, has even dropped in on 25-foot waves on the back of a jet ski while photographing big-wave surfers.

Goulding is also offering a new kind of medium called dye sublimation on aluminum, a contemporary alternative to acrylic, canvas, or matted framed prints. “This material is really vivid, colorful, sharp, and brings out the imagery,” said Goulding.

The 1,300 square-foot gallery will include original, high-end souvenirs, such as tote bags, coasters, and mobile phone cases donning Goulding’s photography. The new gallery will also include a portrait/product photography studio open to other professional photographers by appointment only on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“A lot of local photographers need a place to shoot product or portraits for their clients, or they need the use of some space with a green screen, lighting, or other equipment. I want to be a resource for other professionals and support the local photography community,” Goulding said. “I’m very passionate about what I do, and my goal is to share it with people who don’t get to experience the ocean like I do.”
