$I was invited to check out the SUP World Championships on Tahiti. I was never really sure if I liked SUP, ‘cause back home in Germany, too many people use it as a modern version of Nordic walking. But checking out Garrett McNamara and all these big wave legends ripping these huge boards in triple overhead barrels at Sapinus was more than a little impressive. $We organized a trip to Iceland and scored some empty, but freezing waves. After checking out another spot, we found a huge glacier-lake on the south side of the island. We decided to jump in the water, which was colder than a caipirinha. But paddling around and climbing across these icebergs was really something amazing. Lars Jacobsen, 30, is a freelance journalist and photographer from Hamburg, Germany. His photos and words have appeared in several major publications around the globe. But his portfolio isn’t doing all the traveling; Jacobsen himself is on an airplane more often than his desk. Thanks to his job as editor-in-chief of Germany’s SURFERS magazine, you can meet him on one of his many off-the-beaten-path surf trips, which have taken him from freezing Iceland to boiling India, and many places in between.
