The Inertia

Oceanographic magazine has just announced their 2024 Ocean Photographer of the Year winners. The long-running contest gathers the year’s best ocean-based photos from around the world, in a variety of categories.

The competition invites ocean photographers (both professional and amateur) to submit work to be judged by a panel of ocean photographers, editors and museum/gallery curators This year’s overall winner was Rafael Fernández Caballe, for his image of a Bryde’s whale off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. In addition, a number of other categories crowned victors, including Wildlife, Fine Art, Adventure, Conservation (Impact), Conservation (Hope) and Human Connection. In all, a total of 118 images are recognized each year.

Surfing made appearances in several submissions, particularly in the Adventure category. The second place finish in Adventure went to Sébastien Bachellereau, for a drone-captured aerial photo of a surfer in New South Wales. Also among the Adventure finalists were two photos from John Barton of surfers in the Mentawais.
