The Inertia

If Jordy Smith can air into a floating trash can in the ocean, why can’t your waste? That’s the question that director Dan Mace poses at the beginning of this video – a stunt he hopes will raise awareness about litter, and plastic pollution in the ocean more broadly.

“The ocean has given me everything,” says Jordy, who stresses the need for change to solve the global ocean plastic problem.

As it happens, Jordy can air into a floating trash can. And while there are numerous components of this video to nitpick – namely that a criticism of plastic pollution is being made by a surfer wearing a neoprene wetsuit, performing an air into a trashcan whose skeleton is made of PVC pipe (which the filmmaker actually says was upcycled)– Mace contends this video isn’t a solution, it’s a conversation starter. With 138 comments and counting, the majority of which are positive, it’s certainly that.

Mace implores viewers to head to letstalktrash.org to keep the conversation going.
