Nantucket, Siasconset is right up against the Atlantic ocean, with the next stop being Portugal.

My daughter sent me this photo a day or so ago. It’s where a friend’s house used to be. The ocean inched forward and eventually the house fell in the ocean.

Erosion, like rust, never sleeps.

Photos like this one are tragic on a number of levels, and yet this is not a new lesson. In fact, more than two thousand years ago we were told this logical point, the parable of the wise and foolish builders.

We experience this lesson every summer when we play on the beaches with our kids. We get lost in the creation of an extravagant sand castle and then the tide comes in… and washes it away.

Even as I type this post the ocean moves forward and takes the land in front of it. There are some things in life that we can control. We must come to the conclusion that erosion is not one of them.
