Surfers are an anthropomorphizing bunch. Mother Ocean she bringeth waves. But she also demandeth respect. Fun and enjoyment can quickly spell calamity for the unsuspecting or uneducated when it comes to the sea. For millenia human beings, wary of the dangers of the oceans, have venerated gods of the sea in hopes of safe passage, for food to eat, etc.
But in the Croatian town of Zadar, adjacent the Adriatic, one artist elected to give the waves a voice in music, behold the ‘sea organ’. Waves along the promenade blow air into tubes below, emitting random, experimental, somewhat haunting melodies. Beautiful? Maybe. Not quite the word I’d choose. But incredible nonetheless.
