Surfers Against Sewage launched one of the most committed campaigns ever. Life long commitment. The Save Our Seas Marine Litter Tattoo campaign is meant to highlight the growing scale and permanence of the marine litter crisis.
The brainchild of an ad agency called M&C Saatchi, the campaign enlisted the help of tattoo artist Nick the Tailor –who, if you’re into tattoos, you have heard of. Nick’s style is a blend of traditional western along with a healthy dose of color mixed in.
The campaign found supporters willing to forever etch the importance of a clean ocean onto their skin. Eleven time world longboard champ Ben Skinner, along with pro surfer Corinne Evans went under the gun.
The amount of garbage recorded in the UK’s beaches last year was at its highest ever. For every kilometer (just over half a mile, for the Americans) an average of 2,457 pieces of trash was recorded. That is not a good thing. Trash on our coastlines isn’t only ugly, it threatens the entire ecosystem, which, as big and beautiful as it is, is pretty damn fragile.
The launch of the campaign coincided with the UK’s biggest community beach clean up ever–the SAS’s Big Spring Beach Clean. At over 150 of the UK’s beaches, over 5,000 volunteers showed up to pick up our litter.
