The Inertia

Patagonia is a company that walks the walk. Sure, it’s definitely a company with a bottom line, but the people in charge do a heck of a lot more for our outdoor playgrounds than most companies. Yvon Chouinard, the founder, is an adventurer to his core, and he hold a deep and profound respect for the planet. From climbing to surfing, Chouinard has a wealth of experience out of the office.

The brand routinely makes stunning films highlighting various environmental issues — take, for example its use of recycled fishing nets — and in their newest one, called For the Love of the Sea, they look at the fishing industry that exists on the Welsh coastline and a company that’s doing things differently.

“The documentary short follows Câr y Môr, the first community-owned regenerative ocean farm in Wales,” the description explains. “Cultivating versatile crops like seaweed with zero-input techniques, the Haines family reveals the powerful ways that the ocean can help fight climate change while nourishing people in more ways than one.”

While there are issues with solving the climate crisis — we can’t, for example, just simply stop using fossil fuels without causing considerable harm to the economy and many people who rely on it — we need to figure out ways to shift our way of doing things into something sustainable. Because without a livable planet, after all, we can’t have an economy at all. Câr y Môr is a good example of a different way of doing things that both helps the community and the planet.
