Hawaii has been having a lot of shark sightings and attacks lately. This weekend, a film crew was shooting off the coast of Hawaii when tiger sharks surrounded and attacked them.
The Netflix film crew was stationed in shallow waters near Layson, filming for their docuseries Our Planet II. The crew members were in inflatable boats when a 15-foot tiger shark leapt out of the water and bit holes in the side of their boat.
“The original idea was to do an underwater shoot with the tiger sharks waiting in the shallows at Laysan, but the first day the tiger sharks were around, the crew got into these inflatable boats, and two sharks attacked them,” series producer Huw Cordey told Forbes. “It was like something out of ‘Jaws.’ The crew was panicked and basically made an emergency landing on the sand.”
The crew producer/director Toby Nowlan described the attack to Radiotimes.com: “The whole boat exploded. We were trying to get it away, and it wasn’t having any of it. It was horrific. That was the second shark that day to attack us.”
Luckily, the crew was filming close to shore and made it safely to the beach. They then sent out a rubber dinghy, which was attacked by giant trevallies, knocking the motor out.
It’s unclear whether the crew will continue to film in the same location and whether or not they got any footage of the attack, but Our Planet II may include some epic shots.
