The Inertia

The ocean is a wildly interesting place. Despite our best efforts, we’ve only been able to explore around 20 percent of it. In that 20 percent, we’ve seen vast numbers of extraordinarily strange creatures — aliens right here on Earth, if you will. It stands to reason, then, that in the remaining 80-ish percent, there exists some truly bizarre animals. One of the strangest zones is the midnight zone.

The midnight zone is the depths from 1,000-4,000 meters (3,300 – 13,100 feet). It’s too deep for light to reach, so, as the name implies, it’s in constant darkness. The animals that call it home have developed some pretty wild features, and BBC’s Earth’s Blue Planet II released the eight-minute video above, which is narrated by the inimitable David Attenborough. It shows just a sliver of what’s swimming around down there while we’re walking around up here, and it’s crazier than you’d expect.
