The Inertia

Winter is just around the corner, and if you live in bear country, you know what that means. Lock up your garbage cans, because they’re looking to get fat.

Bears hibernate in the winter, and since they can’t eat when they’re asleep, bears need to pack on the pounds to make it through until spring. Fall for a bear is a time of gluttony. A time to eat rotting salmon washed up on the banks. A time to raid garbage cans full of old chicken bones. Gaining weight is the name of the game, and one particular bear in Colorado may very well be winning.

Officials from Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Southwest Region shared a series of video clips from one of their trail cameras in the Durango area this week. One of the bears they found is… portly, to put it nicely.

While it’s not known exactly how much the bear weighs, it’s safe to say he’s definitely got most of the other bears beaten. “He’s a thicc boi,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Southwest Region wrote on X… “Genuinely need to know how much more this black bear thinks he needs to eat before finding a den this year?”
