The Inertia

By now, the whole world knows. Instagrams, Snapchats, Tweets, and carrier pigeons have been flung into the ether, warranted or not, alerting the masses that the end is nigh…it’s raining in Los Angeles. And all hell’s breaking loose.

While most Angelenos tend to over-exaggerate when it comes to a few light drizzles (compared to most of humanity, who experience real weather), the downpour has been quite significant. Mudslides, Mini Cooper-swallowing puddles, and all-out bedlam on the streets. The flooding has been serious and the Los Angeles River (aka the lazy river of hep C) has turned into a tumultuous overflow of chocolatey runoff.

One Angeleno braved the artificial riverbank and caught a glimpse at the L.A. River doing its best impression of Kelly Slater’s wave pool – but, let’s be honest, it pales in comparison. Still, it’s a pretty cool sight if you’ve ever seen the typically tame waterway. No sign of anyone trying to surf the standing wave yet. But then again, without a hazmat suit and penicillin shots at the ready, it’s basically a deathwish.

And plus, there have been decent waves in the L.A. recently in the real ocean due to the first glimmer of Godzilla El Niño.

If the clip of the standing wave doesn’t appear on your browser below (damn technology!), you can click here to view it.
