The Inertia

Frank Wacha, owner of Kona Beach Cafe, in Jensen Beach, Florida, was attacked by a shark two years ago this Saturday. Luckily, he survived. To commemorate his run-in with the shark, he’s changing the restaurant’s menu for one day. According to a Florida radio station, on Saturday only, they will serve 50 pounds of shark meat, which is legal in the United States.

Unsurprisingly, this has brought some heat on Wacha who has somewhat of a sadistic and ironic sense of humor. Also unsurprisingly, the restaurant’s Facebook page is the site of much derision with one commenter saying they wished Frank Wacha had lost his leg.

The restaurant owner replied with a comment on the page saying, “Don’t know if you’ve heard, but apparently some misinformed folks think that our yearly Kona Bites Back event is promoting the killing of sharks. For the record, we’re serving, for one day only, a few pounds of shark meat that we purchase from a US certified food vendor…”

This is a sad situation for many given the shark species’ struggle for life in Western Australia. Florida was home to the highest number of shark attacks in the country last year, and nearby New Smyrna Beach carries the title of “Shark Attack Capital of the World,” the danger of which has apparently left some folks more contemptuous than others.

Just a taste of the hate.

Just a taste of the hate.
