There is no end to the amount of bizarre sea life that exists below the ocean’s surface. From massive oarfish to ancient and dangerous sea life, it seems the ocean’s oddities know no end. The above picture surfaced this week in an article on Lightly Braised Turnip claiming the 160-foot giant squid washed ashore in Santa Monica, California.
The article went on to say, “Scientists believe that following the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant an unknown number of sea creatures suffered genetic mutations that triggered uncontrolled growth – or ‘radioactive gigantism.’”
Clearly false (and photoshopped), the point remains that people seem fascinated with whatever washes up on the beach that lives in the ocean’s depths. Others still will make up stories to be entertained by. The latter is pretty desperate, but at the same time, it is interesting to ponder whether or not creatures like this do exist.
For now, it seems a healthy amount of skepticism isn’t a bad idea, as the above squid looks awfully similar to this squid, which measured 30 feet and washed ashore in Spain. As anyone with an average understanding of Photoshop will tell you, that’s not a tough image to fake. Nonetheless, a hat tip to Lightly Braised Turnip for piquing our interest.
