Giant squids are something out of fairy tales. Sightings are so rare because they normally inhabit the deepest areas of the ocean–place so dark, cold, and inhospitable to humans that we know almost nothing about them.

But on Christmas Eve, a juvenile giant squid decided it would explore warmer, shallower Japanese harbor called Toyama Bay. In doing so, it gave everyone watching a once-in-a-lifetime glimpse. A diver quickly jumped in to film the event, which lasted for a few hours, according to CNN. Then, he guided back out to sea. While this squid was around 12 feet long, adults can reach up to 40 feet.
