The Inertia

On Wednesday afternoon, a 10-year-old boy was stalked and attacked by a shark while bodyboarding at Oahu’s Makaha Beach. After sustaining serious wounds to his right leg, the boy was rushed to Waikiki’s Queens Medical Center.

Off duty lifeguard Capt. Kelly Krohne was surfing near the boy when he witnessed the attack. He and another bodyboarder, Mike Ward, were able to get the boy away from the shark and then the three rode a wave to shore for safety.

“I saw this ten-year-old boy get bumped out of the water, and he started screaming, ‘Uncle! Uncle! I got hit! I got hit!’,” Krohne told Hawaii News Now. “Me and another person paddled over to him, looked at his leg. He had three gashes on his leg. Looked at his thigh, and his thigh was open.”

A shark was spotted earlier in the day feasting on pig remains at the nearby Keeau Beach; that sighting prompted officials to clear the water. Just moments prior to the attack, officials were in the process of posting warning signs at Makaha.

This attack marks the seventh shark attack this year in Hawaii, with three of them being this month on Oahu, reports Hawaii News Now. One of the more gruesome events involved a man attacked by a 13-foot Tiger Shark on the Big Island, which he documented the aftermath via Instagram.
