The Inertia

Simon Beck is dedicated. That’s one adjective some might use to describe spending countless hours walking in circles in freezing temperatures. Others might call it crazy. Either way, the giant works of art that Beck creates–most often in the Alps–in otherwise undisturbed fields of snow are incredible to look at.

Beck, a British national, has an uncanny background that’s worked perfectly in the making of his art. He studied engineering at Oxford and won a British orienteering championship. So he knows directions, which he’d have to in order to finish his symmetrical works that cover an area roughly 100 by 100 yards.

It’s inspirational, in an existential kind of way, when artists use mediums they know to be temporary and decide to use them anyway. In this case, Beck’s tracks only last until the next snowfall, but he carries on anyway, emulating the patterns found in nature. Yes, beauty, no matter how temporary, is worth creating.
