There’s something to be said for putting your money where your mouth is. While it’s no secret Patagonia is one of the leaders in businesses that double as environmental activists, they’re clearly following through on the belief that caring for our planet doesn’t have to conflict with running a successful business. In their more than 40 years in existence, the apparel company says they’ve contributed almost $80 million in grants and in-kind donations to outside organizations that are active in caring for our planet. But this week they’ll be stepping that effort up just a notch. The American clothing company is donating 100% of their Black Friday (November 25th) sales to grassroots organizations working to protect our air, water and soil.
“This we know: If we don’t act boldly, severe changes in climate, water and air pollution, extinction of species and erosion of topsoil are certain outcomes,” Patagonia President and CEO Rose Marcario wrote in a statement. “The threats facing our planet affect people of every political stripe, of every demographic, in every part of the country. We all stand to benefit from a healthy environment—and our children and grandchildren do, too.”
Traditionally, Patagonia donates 1% of its global sales in retail stores and on Patagonia.com to support a list of the same grassroots environmental organizations, but decided during a “difficult and divisive time” it was important to go further and give our planet a gift or two. The 1% for the Planet initiative currently consists of 1,200 member companies and nonprofits throughout 40 different countries. So, many of these same groups will be receiving a healthy little Black Friday Holiday bonus, as Patagonia believes they are often underfunded and under the radar. Further, they’ll use the opportunity to provide customers with information about how to get involved and take action in their own communities.
Not a horrible way to kick off what can be a stressful Holiday season for some.
