Why don’t they call it the “Laird Rover”?

The Inertia

The legendary Laird Hamilton has made history again and again — pioneering Peahi, creating tow-surfing, foilboarding and SUPing. But he’s outdone himself this time: Hamilton has become the first surfer in history to make a bunch of friends while in the lineup.

That’s probably the most notable aspect of a new Land Rover commercial starring Hamilton.

Oh there’s this, too: Just last month, Chevrolet and Hurley teamed up to create a truck aimed at surfers. And from the looks of it, Land Rover has sort of joined the party, too. The British SUV maker just dropped this new commercial with the barrel-chested diety aiming to make their brand new Land Rover Discovery look very surf friendly.

In the commercial, the Hawaii-bred god goes for a sesh in Ventura County. Before paddling out with 8-year-old super grom Jett Prefontaine, Hamilton locks the doors using a waterproof bracelet, a feature very similar to the Hurley-inspired Chevrolet Colorado Z71. (Not that there was anything wrong with the rusty spare key some of us use — if we can find the damn thing). Apparently, the wristband can withstand temperatures ranging from -58º to +125ºF. It’s also waterproof up to 98 ft beneath the sea.

While Laird’s out there, he pulls off his history-making friendship cultivation. And, still in the lineup, he pulls out his smartphone, taps a few buttons and presto chango, rearranges the seats to accommodate his new buddies.

Land Rover made a similar commercial with Bear Grylls in which he deployed the same remote seat-changing feature. While skydiving. Because that’s what skydivers do, apparently.

Suggestion: Rename it the “Laird Rover”.

The New Discovery Dynamic Design Pack makes its public U.S. debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show today, November 16.
