It happened. China is embracing action sports as never before. Thousands of smiling, curious Chinese invaded the National Exhibition Center for the 10th ISPO Fair in Beijing, held between February 19 to 22. It was a big family reunion for a lot of the biggest board sports companies in the world.
GoPro, Volcom, Xsories, Oakley, Roxy, Sector9, Skullcandy, Vonzipper, Loaded, Union, Dragon, Nitro and many other brands all showed up. When the energy is right, you can feel it in the air, and this is what happened during these few days in the cold and overpolluted Mandarin Capital.
An always smiling and excellent Chinese speaker, Tor Petersen, chairman of GoPro for China, is ready to spread the stoke in China. The huge crowd welcomed him, enjoying the shows at Gopro stand and confirming that the right direction had been taken.
GoPro was just one of many that were glad to be a part of ISPO. “We are really happy about our venue at ISPO,” declared Xsories China Marketing Manager Edouard Moreau. “It’s a great atmosphere with all the action sport brands and feedback from the visitors. We’re happy to have met new potential partners for our development in China and Asia,” he continued.
Each spokesman from different companies had great things to say about the event. “We had positive feedback from the fair. There’s a great atmosphere these days here at ISPO,” said Elijah Kislevitz of Volcom China, after a skateboarding session on the halfpipe made by Volcom. The Volcom stand was filled to capacity for the entire time.
The growth of surfing in China may positively influence some aspects of modern Chinese society. It can help promote a healthy lifestyle and teach the Chinese people about the importance of the ocean’s preservation.
Chinese snowboard pioneer Wang Lei underlined the importance of respect for nature and the mountains when he introduced the Protect our Winters Foundation. If, for western countries, these values are more common than they are in China, then for him to speak about those ideals is a symbol of a larger, more earth conscious way of thinking.
