I am a lecturer at the University of Southampton and a researcher studying deep-sea taxonomy and biodiversity at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. I am also the manager of the Discovery Collections – a unique collection of deep-sea samples. My research focus is the taxonomy, biogeography and biodiversity of deep-sea amphipods. As a taxonomist, I have a keen interest in the advances in modern methods of taxonomic databasing, interactive web-based keys and digital illustration. I work as an editor for the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and currently chair the Steering Committee. I coordinate the World Amphipoda Database and I am a joint coordinator of the World Register of Deep-Sea Species, a thematic portal of WoRMS which aims to capture all species living deeper than 500m.I also retain more than a passing interest in fish parasitology and in particular studies of Cymothoid (tongue-biting) isopods following my PhD, studying the taxonomy, ecology and pathology of cymothoid isopods in both wild and farmed fish.
