Experience
It’s really no surprise that Nate ended up moving out west. After all, on pretty much every childhood summer trip he can remember, his family loaded up the camper and headed out from Wisconsin, traveling to different National Parks, Monuments, and Forests each year. On those trips, Nate learned about and fell in love with the mountains, forest, water, and desert.
After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Nate spent a couple of years traveling in Europe and Asia before settling in Arizona for graduate school. He earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff before moving south to Tucson.
His home in the Sonoran Desert is a year-round running, hiking, biking, and camping paradise. Yet, Nate also loves Arizona as a home base from which to find water whenever he can; as a Midwesterner at heart, sometimes the desert gets a little too dry (plus, his dogs love a good swim).
Nate is an expert hiker, trail runner, and camper, having logged thousands of miles on trails and hundreds of nights in campgrounds, forests, and backcountry sites around the world. He has also enjoyed snowboarding for nearly 20 years (despite some broken limbs along the way).
Career Highlights
- Running (and finishing!) first marathon, placing 11th at the Arizona Trail Vail Scramble
- Writing a full series of road trip guides around the great state of Arizona for Road.Travel
A Word From Nate
For the better part of a decade, I’ve been rambling around and writing the whole way. I like to know a little too much about everything, because what’s life without learning? That approach is applied wholeheartedly (and whole-bodily) in my gear pursuits, and I truly love finding and testing the best stuff to help everyone get outside. I’m always restless, always hungry, and always ready to load the dogs in the car and hit the road for adventures big and small.
