Marissa Milliken was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and spent her entire childhood on or near the water. She learned to swim before she could walk and started racing small sailing dinghies at the age of five. Her family vacations almost entirely consisted of boat trips to the Florida Keys and the Bahamas, all spent fishing, sailing, windsurfing, and free-diving. At a young age, she developed an intense passion and respect for the ocean, and that same passion drew her to pursue a career in the United States Navy. She is currently stationed in Virginia Beach, VA with her husband Brad (an officer in the Coast Guard) where they have started a beach cleanup effort called The Better Beach Project.
