James was born January 4, 1983 in Montauk, New York. He first took photography in high school as a way escape academic classes without being hassled by hall monitors. He would flash his camera at them and they wouldn't ask him any further questions. Having failed photography the first time around, but getting an understanding of the fundamentals, he gave it another go as an elective in college. This time it stuck. As a surfer, and living in and around the ocean his whole life, shooting in water came natural to him. Using landscape of Montauk and the people in it as his subjects, James is able to document the true essence of Montauk. Snowy, windy, dark, cold and numb are just a few adjectives to take into consideration when searching for Montauk-based aquatic photographer, James Katsipis. There is nowhere he would rather be than to be swimming off Montauk Point lighthouse, with his camera in the middle of February, and after a fresh snow storm that hit the night before.
