It wasn’t long before I realized that the canyons of San Francisco’s corporate world just didn’t reconcile with the needs of my newborn son. The thought of dropping him off at childcare and pumping breast milk in the Pyramid Building was less than ideal, so I traded the complexities of my position in a large law firm for the simplicity of building sand castles in Laguna Beach with my children. Little did I know, I would be taken on this unlikely journey of photographing the life forces of the sea. The ocean is a contrast of powers, offering reflection and serenity of the soul, yet capable of unmatched power and violence. The opportunity to stop in time a fleeting moment that illuminates the ever-changing moods of the ocean is infinite. I wish my images to focus on and explore the interplay between species and sea, capturing moments that show the many faces of the ocean and how people play and react to this magnificent force of nature. “There is beauty in everything. Be patient. Be impulsive. Never forget to look up and always remember to look down.” I love these words by writer, editor and world photographer Narina Exelby, and I would add, “Always remember to look deep inside.”
