Raised in the Boston area, grew up sailing and windsurfing on the cape and islands. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania where he was captain of the sailing team, he had a brief stint windsurfing in Hawaii, where he met his wife, Cheryl. Non-windy days led to the addition of surfing as the perfect companion sport to windsurfing, which requires big wind. A return to Boston for medical school did not quench the flame for wave sports. Dr. Nathanson decided train in Emergency medicine at Los Angeles County –USC because the surfing was good year-round, the knife and gun club could be counted on to keep the ER busy. After many trips surf/windsurf trips to Baja, a major earthquake, forest fires, riots, and a triple shooting in the ER it was time to head back East to his first (and current) job at Brown Medical School, where he is an associate professor.
