When I started my own swimwear label focused on quality surf bikinis, my goal was to promote women’s surfing and inspire younger generations of girls to keep active, surf hard and explore. Part of that vision was wanting to create unique action-packed videos of women surfing well and doing cool, adventurous activities in their bikinis – just as a reminder to the world that girls rip too. A little bit of girl power doesn’t hurt anything, especially in our industry.
“Destination Mentawai WavePark” was made in this exact vision. The video was filmed in one of the most beautiful and remote places on earth, the WavePark Mentawai Island in Indonesia, which ticks all the boxes for a successful surf trip: world-class waves, consistency, an abundance of things to do, and warm, crystal clear water to do it in or around. Needless to say, the area is home to some of the most challenging waves in the world, so when my Aussie friend Lucy and I packed our quiver and got on the plane, we knew we’d need to bring our best.
As it turned out, the waves ended up being pretty small and playful through the trip (possibly for the best). However, we still managed to score super fun waves every single day, starting with early morning sessions at Hideaways, the powerful left-hander that was right out the front of our bungalow. Lucy and I have unfinished business with the Mentawais, though, so we’ll be back for more. In the meantime, I hope this video makes a lot of girls want to grab their boards and go shred.
ADVICE TO SURFERS TRAVELING TO THE MENTAWAIS:
-Get all your emails done and stack up on movies before the trip as the internet in the Mentawai is either super slow or nonexistent.
-Stay in the Playgrounds area for more surfing options.
-Girls, bring your surf sistas with you. You won’t see any girls in the lineup, so you’ll appreciate having another lady to support and push you.
-Stay in a land resort so you can enjoy the benefits. You’ll have maximum flexibility, you can surf the break out front by yourself in the morning before the other boats arrive, you’ll work with the surf guides every day to find the best spot to surf, and then spend your down time on a magical island.
Note: Special thanks to DHD Surf for providing the Koloea crew with a great quiver of boards and to Wavepark Mentawai. You can find more from the author and learn about her brand of surf bikinis here.
