The Inertia

Go shark diving, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. Well it wasn’t that fun for Steven Sim, who was on a shark diving trip in Fiji when out of the blue, a tiger shark in the 13- to 15-foot range decided to crash the party. “This happened on May 17, 2019,” reads the video caption. “The video is from a buddy’s GoPro. I never thought this would happen to me. I think I am the first diver who has been attacked when doing a shark dive. Happened so fast, the tiger shark just came and took a bite on my head….”

Well Sim is certainly right about one thing: the tiger shark did come after his noggin. But it’s doubtful he’s the first person to be attacked by a shark while shark diving. When one agrees to go shark diving, you are, after all, diving with sharks. There’s an inherent danger in that.

The group apparently saw the female patrolling the area and one guide reportedly tried to ward off the large fish. The guides and other divers then came to Sim’s rescue when the shark attacked. The shark bit into Sim’s head, leaving a three-inch laceration, but luckily got mostly metal tank in its mouth instead of Sim’s skull. “His head was in the shark’s mouth, and later the dive master managed to kick her away,” a close friend of the diver told media. “While the shark was leaving, (his) mask and hoodie were pulled off.”

This guy was lucky, to say the least.
