On February 21, Pipeline was perfect. “Perfect,” of course, is a relative term — one surfer’s definition might be a little different from the next surfer’s — but when it’s 4-6 feet with the occasional eight footer and offshore winds… well, not one of those surfers is going to say it’s not good.
This time of year can be both a blessing and a curse for North Shore surfers. The waves get really good, yes, but because it is the season for really good waves and surf events, it is also the time of year that sees a serious uptick in crowds.
“Everyone’s focus was on the Hurley Pro at Sunset Beach so the crowd wasn’t as crazy as it usually is,” Surfers of Hawaii wrote on YouTube. “Watch as these surfer take advantage of the super fun surf!”
The Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, just down the road from Pipe, was won by Jack Robinson and Molly Picklum, both of whom put on stellar performances in fantastic conditions. But for Pipe surfers who weren’t at Sunset, like Caio Ibelli, Koa Rothman, Legend Chandler, Tosh Tudor, and more, it was a day to be remembered.
