A little competition between brothers can be a great thing. Inevitably, when that concept is brought up in the context of the surf world, we tend to think of Andy and Bruce Irons sitting on the verge of entering the Thunder Dome at all times (two brothers enter, only one leaves). But the silver lining is that growing up with the proper mix of talent between siblings and a healthy bit of love, no matter how it’s displayed, can push people to impressive heights.
Now, you’d think Makua Rothman challenging little brother Koa to a good old fashioned surf off is a pretty straight forward affair. Wax up, paddle out, and surf off. Fate will decide whoever bested who.
Or, things quickly turn into an amusingly-disorganized showdown. Makua wants it to be whoever throws down the biggest hack. Just one, singular grown-up bashing of a lip. But then, you know what, let’s just go with “whoever’s ripping the hardest.” And while we’re at it, let’s wager a haircut. Yeah, the loser gets a haircut from the winner. But not like a crazy haircut…but definitely a haircut. And let’s let the This Is Livin’ viewers decide…
Naturally, as any brothers would do, there’s a disagreement about who out surfed who.
Also worth noting: We lost count of how many times Koa Rothman points out that his shiny new purple surfboards are “sick.” But we agree, they’re sick.
